Purple Podded Pea has attractive ornamental pink flowers followed by gorgeous purple pods. A must have if you want to add some colour to your vegetable garden. A maincrop variety, good production and the pods can be eaten as mangetout if picked very young. The peas inside the pods are green. Peas are a good source of Vitamins A, C, B1 and folic acid and also contain soluble fibre. Sow the pea seeds outside from April until June in rich soil, about 3 cm deep. Allow 6 cm between plants and about 45 cm between the rows. Alternatively you can sow the seeds in an unheated greenhouse in an old gutter or moduls in March and plant out the seedlings when about 10 cm tall and all risk of frost has passed in your area. Keep weed free during the season. Protect from birds as soon as seedlings appear and support the plants with suitable twigs and netting. Water well when plants are in flower; this will improve cropping. Regular picking will encourage further cropping.
